Canoeing –
Cromford Canal
Task
The group is required to earn a realistic profit by participating
in a canoe journey from a starting point along the Cromford
Canal, then return to the start point whilst successfully performing
sub tasks along the way. (A Maximum of 2 miles in distance).
General Details
The group begins with a budget of £2000 pounds that it can
allocate to skills training and the hire of essential equipment
prior to starting.
The group must select a time in which it anticipates that it
will complete its journey.
Once the group has begun the journey the time cannot be amended.
Failure to give written notice of an agreed target time prior
to starting, will result in the shortest target time being allocated
and an automatic reduction on any earnings of 50%.
Each time any contact is made with the canal sides a penalty
fee of £100 will automatically be incurred.
The group is fully responsible for managing and keeping track
of its own finances and may at any time be subject to an internal
audit inspection. Any mis-management of a groups’ finances
will automatically incur a fine of £500.
Arrival at the finish point later than the forecast target time
will mean that the contract to supply will be terminated and
no earnings will be realised.

Skills
Initially there will be a safety briefing that all participants
must attend – there is no cost for this briefing.
There after: -
Skills training sessions are available on arrival at the
canal at a cost of £25 per person per session.
Two training sessions are available one session will cover basic
kayak skills and one session will cover basic Canadian skills.
Equipment Pool
There will be a pool of equipment available for the group(s)
to select from, on a first come first served basis.
All participants will be required to wear safety equipment
(helmet and buoyancy aid) at no extra cost.
Sub Task Details
Task 1.
With a temporary 25% reduction in the group’s total
number of paddles, all boats must pass in silence underneath
the bridge without any touch of the canal sides.
Task 2.
With all boats in contact with each other, the group must
perform a 360 degree turn at the site of the concrete landing
point, without any touch of the canal sides.
Task 3.
All boats must cover the distance from the garden centre
wall to the tow path wall in less than 60 seconds.
Task 4.
Each boat must successfully perform a 360 degree turn, exactly
adjacent to the black pipe.
A maximum of two attempts per boat will be allowed.
Task 5.
At any point determined by the group individuals must stand
fully upright in their craft
Task 6.
Each boat must travel maintaining a backwards facing direction,
for the length of the wired stone wall, without any contact
of the canal side. Each group must provide two persons who will
be blindfolded for the task.
Task 7.
Each boat must pass under the bridge without any touch of
the canal sides or bridge.
On the return journey
you may complete any task for a second time however, any income
gained on a second completion will be at a reduction of 50%
of the published possible earnings.

Income
For
each minute the whole group arrives early at the finish point
a bonus of £200 per minute up to a maximum of £1000
per group will be gained.
Expenditure
If
any of the group arrive at the at the finish point later than
the forecast target time,
an
additional loss of £1000 will automatically be incurred.
